German Apple Pudding

German Apple Pudding

Our family has decided we may like this even better than apple pie! It's almost a magical recipe because you make a batter and spread it on the bottom of your baking dish, then top with chopped fresh apples, sprinkle with brown sugar, and drizzle with melted butter. As it cooks, the batter comes up to the top and bakes golden and delicious (especially the edges) because of the butter. The apples are snug underneath and the perfect consistency. So incredible with a scoop of vanilla ice cream!

Chocolate Angel Cake

Chocolate Angel Cake

This dessert is THE ONLY DESSERT you'll ever need in your life to be completely happy. It is our favorite cake of all time, and only comes out for birthdays so it's super special. Every time we have a birthday and I take that first bite again, I am just blown away! It's one of my oldest recipes and I found it in a magazine at my grandma's house when we were first married. It has changed our lives! If you try any one thing from my blog, I hope you'll try this. Seriously, this will blow your mind!

Bee Sting Mini Cakes

Bee Sting Mini Cakes

We are huge bee and honey fans around here ever since we started raising our own bees a year ago. We currently have two healthy, active hives that are producing delicious honey, so I love baking things that involve this magical sticky sweetener. Bee Sting cake is a traditional German cake that has a legend involved with it's name. It's said that it earned its name from its honey topping when a bee was attracted to it, and the baker who invented the cake was stung. Another source cites a legend of German bakers from the 15th century who threw beehives at raiders from a neighboring village, successfully repelling them, and celebrated later by baking a version of this cake named after their efforts. Either way, it's a fun cake to make and eat. The original version is a yeast cake, but to make it fast and easy, I used a box mix vanilla cake and added almond extract. It's topped with a honey buttercream frosting, and then honey caramelized almonds. A delicious and easy treat!

Grandma's Baked Apple Pudding

Grandma's Baked Apple Pudding

This recipe brings back wonderful memories of my grandma who would serve this every winter when we would visit. It is a recipe we have of hers that was clipped out of a newspaper sometime last century. I really have to say it is one of my favorite desserts of all time! It's called a pudding, meaning dessert, and is a spiced apple cake FULL of fresh apple, then topped with the most amazing lemon butter sauce you can imagine. Once people try this, they always want the recipe.

Pumpkin Chiffon Cake

Pumpkin Chiffon Cake

I am so excited about discovering this recipe! It was in my grandma's recipe box and is a General Mills recipe from 1951! It describes this cake as a "spectacular beauty", and I absolutely agree. This delicate, light cake with just the right amount of pumpkin flavor is so incredible. We ate it so fast, and everyone raved about it!

Blueberry Breakfast Cake

Blueberry Breakfast Cake

Can you smell this? Oh, it's divine! A blueberry breakfast cake is the perfect way to start any day. Blueberries, lemon zest, a not-too-sweet cake, and coarse sugar topping. The ingredient we have to thank for this deliciousness is buttermilk! I feel like any recipe I have that uses buttermilk is my favorite. Serve this alongside some bacon or sausage and scrambled eggs, and you have yourself the perfect breakfast or brunch. Now is the time to try this with blueberry season just around the corner!

About Me

About me photo

Hello! I'm a mom of four kids and live in Virginia. Two of my kids have celiac disease, so I've been cooking gluten free for 18 years now! It was very overwhelming when my oldest daughter was diagnosed back in 2007, but it has been a fulfilling journey ever since. I know there are a lot of gluten free blogs out there, but I wanted to create one devoted to food specifically for kids.

Through the years, I've had many friends come to me when they or someone close to them have started down the gluten free path. I used to send them an email detailing our favorite brands, what breads, pastas, pizza, etc. are most enjoyed by my kids, as well as some of our best recipes to get them started. I am hoping to help others who may be new to gluten free eating or just want to have some fresh ideas.

Cooking and baking have always been a passion of mine, so when my daughter was diagnosed, my mom told me "you're just the mom to make the best of this". Moms know just what to say!! It has definitely become second nature to me, and I've found ways to help my kids enjoy food just as much as they would if they could have gluten. The trick..... make it so delicious that my whole family enjoys it! Let's get started!
