We've loved muddy buddies our whole lives, especially since the Chex cereals went gluten free. They became our saving breakfast and snack! I remember writing a personal letter to thank them for being aware of celiac disease and giving my kids so many good cereal options. Back in the day, there were not many! This fun snack gets jazzed up with some Nutella added to the mix and Reese's Pieces thrown in . It's a fun treat at Halloween time that your kids will go nuts over.
Halloween Muddy Buddies
Makes 10 cups
9 cups Chex cereal (Rice Chex, Corn Chex, Chocolate Chex)
1 cup semisweet chocolate chips
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup Nutella
1 teaspoon vanilla
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
2 boxes Reese's Pieces
Add the cereal to a large mixing bowl. In a glass measuring cup, add the chocolate chips, butter, peanut butter, and Nutella. Microwave on high in 30 second intervals until you can stir it to be completely smooth and melted. Add the vanilla and stir. Pour over the cereal and stir to coat all the pieces. In a large gallon-sized zip bag, add half of the powdered sugar. Add half of the coated cereal to the bag, zip closed, and shake to coat. Pour the cereal out onto parchment paper to cool. Repeat with the remaining powdered sugar and cereal. Once cooled, put in serving bowl and add the Reese's Pieces.
Step-by-step tutorial:
Gather your ingredients. You will need Chex cereal, chocolate chips, butter, peanut butter, Nutella, vanilla, powdered sugar, and Reese's Pieces.
Add the cereal to a large mixing bowl. In a glass measuring cup, add 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, 1/4 cup butter, 1/4 cup peanut butter, and 1/4 cup Nutella. Microwave in 30 second intervals until you can stir and it becomes smooth and completely melted.
Pour in 1 teaspoon vanilla and stir.
Pour the chocolate over the cereal. (Mine was not as runny as usual because I used my chocolate chips from the freezer..... pantry chocolate chips are best).
Stir with a spatula until all the cereal pieces are coated in chocolate goodness. Add the powdered sugar to gallon zip bags, then add the cereal and shake to coat. I've learned this works best when you split the batch in two. Pour the sugar coated cereal onto a sheet of parchment to cool.
Once cool, place the muddy buddies into your serving bowl, then add 2 boxes of Reese's Pieces. The colors are so perfect for fall and Halloween!
I leave the bowl with a big serving spoon in it and some plastic cups next to it for the kids to come and serve themselves.
This is such a great snack for a Halloween party or dinner. We also just love to eat it all of October. Muddy buddies are addicting and yummy!
